Going green is a wonderful concept for children to learn as well as adults. Schools that go green are preparing a generation of green conscious students who will be instrumental in helping to conserve the global environment, regardless of how menial the tasks may be. The greenhouse consciousness must be instilled in all students. This significant endeavor must begin by surrounding them with the practices and images of going green.
Green School Buildings
School buildings must be designed to support the green movements. The lighting systems and heating systems in schools must be converted to green. Within the lighting system, light bulbs that burn tons of energy should be replaced by low energy-efficient light bulbs which burn less energy.
The heating systems must be replaced by more efficient heating methods. This starts by designing more solar oriental buildings that store heat in the winter and provide coolness in the summer. Such buildings will be a constant reminder to students to practice green activities. Others systems must be installed along with these two, including floor, ventilation, and electric systems.
Green Practices: Students and Teachers
Students must be taught to take a personal interest in the green movement. This means that must continue to turn off the lights when leaving the class, to throw waste paper in the recycling bin and to use harder sanitizer instead of constantly running the sick water.
Teachers in many schools don’t allow classroom lights to remain on all day. Lights are either turned off in the front of the classroom or in the back of the classroom in order to conserve energy. Sometimes the lights are turned completed off during the day. Many students think this makes the classroom more interesting and cozy.
Schools can come up with the most unique ways of instilling a green consciousness in students. One school, in which I once taught, the class had a weekly practice of reading with the lights off in a darkened room. Each student brought a flashlight. For two hours they were allowed to read books in groups and then write about what they wrote. What a way to promote the green movement?
Green Movement in Schools: Positives and Negatives
One of the advantages that green schools have over average ones is that, not only are they preparing students to be green movers and shakers, they may be paving the way for students to receive a better education overall. For instance, the money which schools can save by adopting a green orientation can be used to invest in better educational resources for children.
However, the disadvantages of schools going green are that it can be quite expensive to design green school buildings. The government would have to take a more aggressive initiative in supplying the necessary funds in order for schools to implement the green reality. Once this is attained, schools can invest in green equipment and materials which can enhance the educational system.
The Future
Clearly, the positives of going green outweigh the negatives. Building a green consciousness within school children of America is a godsend for not only the nation but for the world. Every school must become involved. Entire green concept classes need to be integrated into the curriculum if the next generation is to be successful in sustaining the health of the planet.
